Displaying a brand at an event usually means a screen. There is another method that works differently and often lands harder: gobo projection.

A gobo is a small disc, cut or etched with a design. Shine light through it and the design appears on a wall, a floor or a ceiling - at whatever scale the throw allows.

It is not a substitute for a screen. It does something a screen cannot, which is put branding onto the fabric of a room rather than into a rectangle at one end of it.

Here is what a gobo actually is, how the projection works, and where it earns its place at an event.

What a Gobo Is

The Disc

A gobo is a small disc made of metal or glass. Its face is cut or etched with a design or pattern, and when light passes through, that design is projected onto a surface.

What Can Go On One

Almost anything. Common examples include logos, branding elements such as stripes, dots or shapes, floral patterns, geometric patterns and photographs.

Metal gobos handle simple, bold shapes - logos and text. Glass gobos carry finer detail and full colour, which is where photographs and complex graphics become possible.

If you can design it, it can generally be made into a gobo.

How the Projection Works

A specialised projector shines light through the gobo. The light travels in a straight line and casts the design onto a wall, floor or ceiling.

The projector is the part people get wrong. A standard office or home projector will not produce good results, because it is not designed to focus light in the same way.

A gobo projector has a light source, a lens and a mechanism for holding and focusing the disc, built specifically for the job. Premier Live keeps a range of high-quality gobo projectors, and our technicians know how to get the most from them.

Why Use It

Eye-Catching and Memorable

Gobo projection creates a bold visual that reliably grabs attention.

Part of that is simply that it is less common than a screen. Guests are used to logos on displays; a logo thrown across a ceiling or a dance floor registers differently and tends to stay with people.

Highly Customisable

Because a gobo can carry almost any design, the technique is remarkably versatile - a simple logo, a complex graphic, or a moving image using rotating or animated gobos.

That flexibility means the same technique can deliver subtle background texture in one room and the centrepiece in another.

Works Almost Anywhere

Gobo projection suits nearly any event space, indoors or out. It performs equally well in a conference centre, a ballroom or an outdoor setting.

That makes it a practical way of holding a consistent brand presence across an entire event, including the spaces between the main rooms where screens rarely reach.

Works With Everything Else

It complements rather than competes. Gobo projection sits comfortably alongside LED screens, lighting effects and pyrotechnics, filling the surfaces those elements cannot.

In Summary

Getting the Design Right

The strongest gobo work starts with a design made for the medium.

High contrast reads better than fine gradient. Simple shapes hold up at scale. A logo that works on a business card may need simplifying before it works projected across a wall twenty metres wide.

Our designers and technicians work with you to develop gobos that represent the brand properly - whether you arrive with a finished concept or need somewhere to start.

Getting the Technical Right

Throw distance, brightness, surface texture and ambient light all shape the result. A pale, flat wall in a darkened room gives the cleanest image; a busy, textured or brightly lit surface needs more output to hold up.

Those are the questions worth asking at the planning stage rather than on the day.

What to Expect

Used well, gobo projection is one of the more cost-effective ways of making an event feel branded throughout, rather than branded at one end.

It is quick to rig, quiet in operation, and needs very little attention once focused.
